Cloth diapers or disposable diapers? the debate continues...
So….which one are you? A cloth baby diaper person, or a disposable baby diaper person? You are already or soon will be faced with a decision that every new parent must make and there are good arguments for both – let’s investigate:
Disposables:
The simple convenience of disposable diapers makes them the favorite choice of most busy working moms. They hold mess better, come in a variety of sizes, have special dry liners and fit to perfection and you use them and just throw them away. However, they are an environmental nightmare! Every year 18 billion disposable diapers end up in landfills and each diaper can take up to 500 years to decompose. The 5 million tons of untreated human waste they contain are a breeding ground for diseases. Also, studies show that there is an increased incidence of diaper rash with increased used of disposables.
Cloth Diapers:
There are several qualities of cotton diaper and it is wise to use 100% cotton twill. Traditional cloth diapers also need a cover pant over the top, but cloth baby diapers are less expensive than disposables and more environmentally friendly. However, some argue that laundering of cloth diapers also has an environmental impact.
So how do you make a choice? Well its really down to personal preference, but whatever your choice, you can still ensure that baby remains dry and rash-free – diaper rash is very unpleasant and can be hard to treat. Just make sure to check regularly if baby needs changing and wipe the skin carefully. Avoid alkaline soaps and diaper wipes that contain alcohol, which can dry the skin. Zinc oxide ointment is especially effective in controlling diaper rash. Good luck with your diapering decision.
